"A circular stain glass window" analysis

Descriptive sentences/words in order to inspire a starting point:

I LOVE stain glass windows, they are so colourful and intricate! full of pattern and life. This particular one is from the FCH Chapel. At first I was unsure how to work with it in terms of abstract, as it already was quite abstract. It reminded me of a Kaleidoscope which then brought me to think about how surreal and interesting they can be, and how they transform between several different variations/ colours.

Thought process on the page:

With the Kaleidoscope in mind I changed the colours to what I would prefer, sticking with the main pattern design but tweaking with my own touches, I thought of a glass spherical lamp, held by silver leaves, emitting some rather lovely light. I then decided to play with the mystery of death "what comes next, where do we go" I thought it would be ironic to fill the barrel of a shotgun with pretty patterns and colours, provoking the curiosity of what does it mean? Well it could mean whatever the viewer wants it to mean, mystery, space, light...or just a bunch of pattern and colour.

"Wood detail inside FHC Chapel" analysis

Descriptive sentences/words in order to inspire a starting point:

I really loved the circular flower carvings on the end of the seat isles inside the chapel. I thought it could be a snail shell, or a coin..my inspiration was running low at this point!

Thought process on the page:

So I created a floral motif or surface design, possibly used for a table cloth or fabric pattern of some sort. The wood carving was quite thick so I thought it would serve well as a pretty pot/container.

"Wood carving detail inside FCH Chapel" analysis

Descriptive sentences/words in order to inspire a starting point:

As I was observing this carving I saw a beak like image, like a birds head in the center of the design and under that it looked like 2 knights/soldiers/ just men were stood below this bird like creature. Which then made me think of a cage/entrapment.

Thought process on the page:

After thinking of a cage I liked the idea of taking the carvings patterns and turning them into an abstract product design for a beautiful bird cage, an ornate intricate one. Then I went on to think about entrapment, and suddenly how menacing this carving seemed to me, in response I designed a surreal demon, bird-like creature that eat the souls of courageous men.

"Wood carving detail inside FCH Chapel" analysis

Descriptive sentences/words in order to inspire a starting point:

The amount of interior detail in the chapel is rather beautiful indeed, I love how intricate the wood carvings can be. At first it was quite a challenge to come up with ideas from such a  already refined, complex design. However, after spending probably far too long staring at the design I managed to extract the patterns that stood out to me the most and used them to my advantage.

Thought process on the page:

I used the motifs within the wood to create a strange, surreal fantasy castle or quaint cottage. And also the intricacy inspired me to design a abstract,  fancy mask, like the Viennese ball costume masks.

"A dried plant pod" analysis

Descriptive sentences/words in order to inspire a starting point:

This odd object was what I believe to be a plant pod of some sort. It was hard and quite colourful, deep maroon and auburn orange, with small yellow seeds inside. It looked kind of gross, reminding me of some sort of egg sack, or a cocoon.

Thought process on the page:

I liked the thought of a cocoon, so I scamped a futuristic/contemporary piece of architecture,  following the organic shape of the object but molded it into a sleek, industrial structure. The seeds acting as windows or spherical offices/rooms.  Then as i was thinking about the grotesque egg sack, I liked the thought of a surreal monster insect.

"A dried flower/plant" analysis

Descriptive sentences/words in order to inspire a starting point:

The colour of this object struck me first, a deep raspberry/plum hue, so I assumed it must be a dried plant or flower of some kind. It was quite large in my hand, its structure consisted of layers of leaves or petals. They almost reminded me of feathers on a bird.

Thought process on the page:

I really liked the petal/layered effect. It reminded me of a dress or garment, so I quickly  sketched a design. And then manipulated the colours and shapes into a rough abstract pattern.

Watercolour inktense pencils &

"A dried nut thing..." analysis

Descriptive sentences/words in order to inspire a starting point:

At first I had literally no idea what this object was... in fact I still don't have any clue to what it is, however as I studied it I noticed that it was light, hollow and quite hard, so my guess would have to be a nut shell possibly? who knows, I'm probably wrong...
It looked hairy, but had a hard spiky exterior, with holes virtically along its side.
At one end it had a beak like root, which is when it started looking like a very strange spiecies of bird.
The other end it had a pair of antenna, antlers or tusks.

Thought Processes on the page:

So with the information I had generated; I took the antler idea and sketched a decrotive, elegant and refined sculpture. And also manipulated it into a quirky, odd looking bird.

"A piece of dried fungi" analysis.

Descriptive sentences/words in order to inspire a starting point.:

An intricate organic beautiful motif.
It seemed fragile and porous like a honeycomb structure, a little like bone marrow.- dry
It had a lot of depth, like a sponge which then made me think about a brain.

Thought Processes on the page:

Experimental ideas expressed though conceptual sketches-

I looked at the interesting patterns it had to offer, deconstructed it's natural flow and reconstructed it into an applied motif for a stain glass window. I then tried to manipulate its qualities into a serial concept; a brain within a human skull.

Object 1. A piece of dried fungi.

Week 1 Over view.

Objective: Critically observing 8 objects: Drawing them in a descriptive and informative manner and thinking about how I could manipulate them into an expressive illustration, however simultaneously possessing the nature of the object. Focusing on how I can visually express it's qualities through my own language. I thought about exaggeration, how I could reduce & refine the shapes and colours into serial and abstract forms.
