Journals.

I went home to Devon last weekend to see my family for the first time in 6 months... way too long to be away from the beach!! Above is a Phoebe memory arial map view of Westward Ho! Beach (3rd largest natural pebble ridge in the world). The purple line showing our route. The tide was up at the beginning so we had to walk around the sand dunes by the Golf courses to reach the wider end of the beach :).

Brief: As I find pattern and colour so stimulating to work with, I thought it would be relevant to incorporate this into my brief.
Recreate one or two double page spreads from journal. Infuse pattern and colour into the natural landscape of the beach, giving back what inspiration we have taken from the earth- all patterns were once organic.

I only had time to recreate one. I would very much enjoy doing all of them if I had the chance. - Watercolour, watercolour Inktense pencils, fine liner and Gell pen.

PATTERN!!

This task really grasped my enthusiasm! I loveeeee working with colour and pattern, I didn't find this particularly challenging as it's one of my more focused are of working. I found it most therapeutic actually. I would of liked to have done more to be honest, but due to the amount of detail, it't difficult to fit in quantity over quality.
The second part of this task was to apply our patterns to an object or landscape, anything really. I decided to wait for when I went back home to Devon so I could use my family and the beach. I ended up using this effective pose of my little sister, she found a beautiful shell, and realised it was broken, I liked that her eye fit through the gap just right. - Media used: Watercolour Intense pencils, fine liner and Gel pen. I really enjoyed this task!

Here is a colour opposite example. - red to green, yellow to purple, blue to orange.

Letters

Watercolour, Graphite, Fine liner and Oil Pastel.
This weeks task was focused on type, how to draw them 3-D without distorting them, and thinking about their composition and layout on each page.

Pittville Pumproom

The first part of this weeks task was to walk to Pittville park and draw elements of the pump room, there wasn't a specific amount, just a personal dose of that we felt was necessary in order to go back to the studio and re create the pump room from just the evidence we had collected.

This is a fine liner technical drawing I made when I returned to the studio, I wanted to get it as perfect as possible using a combination of memory and my earlier drawings. However I didn't collect enough evidence for inside the pillars, so I had to leave it blank.

The last part of the task was to re create the Pump room into any form we liked. Colours!! Pattern, and smooth form, thats what I enjoy to draw!

To be completely honest I picked up a paint brush and let my mind and hand loosen, which is something I struggle with continuously. Im rather pleased with this outcome, I hadn't planned on it being an underwater temple, however its flowing curves and colour pallet indicated once finished that it just wouldn't look complete without a few mermaids setting the scene and scale.

Cars, BROOM BROOM!

This weeks task was to go out and draw cars, then recreate them as illustrations- This one is a Ford Focus.
Common white transit van.
VW Beetle.. mmmmmmmmm yummy
VW Camper split screen.... oh what I would do to get my hands on one of these....
A BMW Z-4, surprisingly, there are quite a few of these whizzing around Pittville area.

I quite enjoyed this task... I found it challenging to keep a variety between illustrations, the easy thing to do would be to give them all personified features like "Bob The Builder" and "Disney Cars" ...

Gater from Disney Cars.

Above are a few pages I scanned in from one of my beloved "Art Of" Books :), I have a nice collection that i have been building up for a few years now. This one is Disney Pixar's "Wreck it Ralph" A visually stunning animation, their racing kart design section seemed perfect for a little non conventional inspiration.

Boxes...and composition

Above is my response to the task of setting up boxes into building-like compositions, and the final using a little creativity to craft the boxes into a building, but only using paper to create windows and doors... I have to admit, this wasn't my most favourite of tasks. Media- watercolour, graphite and fine liner.

2 Point Perspective

Above is a drawing of a church tower- During a drawing trip to oxford..... it was cold. I used pencil whilst there, then later on that evening applied black watercolour to create a more dynamic tonal effect.

In this image I was experimenting with the rules of 2-point perspective, playing with vanishing points. - fine liner and watercolour.

Here is a screenshot from my iPad...casually watching Pocahontas, and I really love this pan zoom into London,  appreciating the skills to create such a landscape, it triggered my thoughts on this project.
